Who's She?: The designeress behind the game of extraordinary women

Who's She

This is Who’s She? - the 2-player guessing game about extraordinary women!

Much like the classic game it’s modelled after, the idea is to guess your opponent’s chosen character before they can get yours. The way you’ll do this is not by grilling them on visual characteristics, however, but rather their accomplishments. “Did she win a Nobel Prize?” “Was she a spy?” “Is there a movie based on her work?” It’s a simple and elegant change, but one that was very important to its Polish creator Zuzia Kozerska-Girard.

“The thought of giving another sexist game as a gift for Christmas simply didn't work for me,” Zuzia explained to us. “I felt the need to fill the gap there and create something! A game for girls especially to see that they can be whoever they wish to, to show them that the great women we know and those who we don't know were just like us!”

And that design choice shines through every facet of the experience. Zuzia makes the conscious choice to use the feminine form of every role where possible (illustratress, paintress, actress). And if you feel like you don’t know enough about the badass women you’re in front of, you’re provided with 28 solid birch-wood biography cards which are both informative and entertaining.

From Amelia Earhart to J K. Rowling, be prepared to discover some incredible adventures! It’s something Zuzia is incredibly passionate about. “I think Agnocide is one of my favorites - the first gynecologist in Athens - who had to disguise herself as a man to exercise her profession.” Then there’s the story of Josephine Baker. “We all know her for her performances and charisma, but learning more about her I discovered she was an incredibly involved activist to combat racism, she refused to perform for a segregated public, and also she was in the French Resistance during WWII, she sneaked messages on her music sheets in invisible ink and in her underwear, she picked on information during parties she attended… well, the list could go on and on.”

Of course, with only 28 slots on the board, not everyone could make the cut. “Just to name a few: Hypatia, Xian Zhang (famous orchestra conductress), Bobbi Gibbs was a tough one, Mae Jemison of course, Shirin Ebadi, Yayoi Kusama, Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, Jane Goodall (this just broke my heart not to include her)...”

Looking at the components, you can tell a lot of love and care went into them. The portraits of the women included in the game are all watercolors by illustratress Daria Golab. The birch wooden pieces are laser cut immaculately by their creator (because yes, women rock lasers too!).

This isn’t Zuzia’s first foray into delivering a gorgeous wooden project. Five years ago, she created Valek - a series of handmade embossing rolling pins. To this day, they’ve shipped over 30,000 units and they continue to expand.

Zuzia set out to create something empowering for everyone who plays it. “I want especially the girls to feel they can do whatever they feel inspired to! Let's not wait for the prince to rescue us, I'd rather see them conquer the world themselves! I do believe the game reveals inspiring women without the recognition in our society that they deserve.”

Who’s She? is available on Kickstarter now until December 7th! Look this way if you want an inspirational gift for the important woman (or man!) in your life.
